Egypt Flag

Egypt's flag has three equal horizontal stripes of red, white, and black — the Pan-Arab colours — with a golden Eagle of Saladin centred on the white stripe. The eagle holds a scroll with the country's official name in Arabic.

The Pan-Arab tricolour of Egypt, Syria, Iraq, and Yemen all share these same three colours. Egypt's version is distinguished by the gold eagle emblem.

Egypt has had many flags. The current red-white-black scheme was introduced after the 1952 revolution that overthrew King Farouk. The Eagle of Saladin replaced the Hawk of Quraish in 1984 during President Mubarak's administration.

Saladin (Ṣalāḥ ad-Dīn al-Ayyūbī) was the 12th-century Kurdish sultan who ruled Egypt and famously recaptured Jerusalem — making the eagle a symbol of Arab strength and historical pride.
