Hungary Flag

Hungary's flag is three equal horizontal bands of red (top), white (middle), and green (bottom). The colours come from medieval Hungarian coats of arms: red and silver (white) from the Árpád dynasty, and green from the hills of Hungary.

The proportions are 1:2. The state flag adds a coat of arms on the white stripe; the civil flag is the plain tricolour.

The red-white-green tricolour became a symbol of the 1848 Hungarian Revolution against Habsburg rule. It was officially adopted after the Austro-Hungarian Compromise of 1867, though suppressed during periods of foreign or Soviet domination.

The 1956 Revolution famously cut out the communist-era emblem from the flag's centre, and the holed tricolour became an enduring symbol of resistance. Hungary's democratic transition of 1989 restored the plain tricolour without any state emblem, as used today.
