Design Breakdown

Mexico's flag has three equal vertical stripes: green (hoist), white (centre), and red (fly), with the national coat of arms centred on the white stripe. The emblem depicts an eagle perched on a cactus devouring a snake — the Aztec legend of Tenochtitlan's founding.

The colours' modern interpretation links green to independence, white to the Catholic faith (or unity), and red to the blood of national heroes, though interpretations have varied through history.

History & Symbolism

The green-white-red tricolour appeared when Mexico declared independence from Spain in 1821. The colours were said to represent the three guarantees of Agustín de Iturbide's Plan of Iguala: independence (green), religion (white), and union (red).

The current coat of arms design was standardised in 1968. The eagle-and-serpent emblem traces directly to the Aztec founding myth, connecting modern Mexico to its pre-Columbian heritage.
