Peru Flag

Peru's flag is three equal vertical stripes: red, white, and red. The civil flag uses only the bicolour triband. The state flag adds the Peruvian coat of arms to the white stripe, featuring a vicuña, a cinchona tree, and a cornucopia of coins.

Red symbolises the blood shed for independence; white represents peace and honour. The proportions are 2:3.

General José de San Martín, the liberator of Peru, reportedly designed the flag after seeing a flock of flamingos (red and white) take flight over Paracas beach in 1820 — a legend that captures the flag's visual inspiration even if the historical facts are debated.

Peru declared independence on 28 July 1821. The current vertical triband was confirmed in 1825 and has remained unchanged. 7 June is celebrated as Flag Day (Día de la Bandera) in Peru.
