Design Breakdown
Singapore's flag has two equal horizontal halves — red on top and white below. In the upper hoist is a white crescent moon and five small white five-pointed stars arranged in a circle.
The crescent represents Singapore as a young nation on the rise. The five stars stand for the nation's ideals: democracy, peace, progress, justice, and equality.
History & Symbolism
The flag was designed by a State Council committee and first raised on 3 December 1959 when Singapore attained self-governance from Britain. Encik Yusof Ishak (later Singapore's first President) chaired the committee.
When Singapore briefly joined Malaysia (1963–1965), the flag was retained as the state flag. At full independence on 9 August 1965, it became the national flag. 9 August (National Day) features the flag prominently at celebrations.
