Vietnam Flag

Vietnam's flag is a large yellow five-pointed star centred on a red field. The red represents revolution and the blood of those who fought for independence; the yellow star represents the five main classes of Vietnamese society — workers, peasants, intellectuals, traders, and soldiers.

The star's five points each represent one group. The proportions are 2:3, and the star should span three-fifths of the flag's height.

The red flag with yellow star was designed by Nguyễn Hữu Tiến in 1940 for the Nam Kỳ Uprising against French colonial rule. It was adopted by the Việt Minh (the independence movement led by Hồ Chí Minh) and first raised after Japan's defeat in 1945.

North Vietnam used the flag from 1945. After reunification in 1976, it became the flag of the unified Socialist Republic of Vietnam, with the star slightly refined. It remains one of the world's most recognisable revolutionary-era flag designs.
