Norway Flag

The Norwegian flag has a red field with a blue Nordic cross outlined in white. The cross is offset to the left, with the intersection point closer to the hoist than the fly.

The cross incorporates the colours of three Nordic neighbours — Danish red, Swedish blue, and a common Scandinavian white — symbolising historical and cultural ties across the region.

Norway used various flags under Danish and later Swedish union arrangements. After a constitutional assembly in 1814, Fredrick Meltzer's design — the current red-white-blue Nordic cross — was adopted by the Norwegian parliament (Storting) in 1821.

For much of the 19th century, Norway was required to fly a union mark in the canton. Full independence from Sweden in 1905 allowed the plain national flag to fly without restriction, a symbol of renewed sovereignty.
