Design Breakdown

Brazil's flag has a green field (representing the forests), a yellow rhombus (representing Brazil's gold wealth), and a blue sphere (representing the sky over Rio de Janeiro at the moment of independence) with 27 white stars (one per state and the Federal District).

A white band across the sphere reads "ORDEM E PROGRESSO" (Order and Progress) — a positivist motto reflecting Brazil's Republican ideals at the flag's adoption in 1889.

History & Symbolism

Brazil declared independence from Portugal in 1822. The original imperial flag used green and yellow (the dynastic colours of the Braganza and Habsburg houses of Emperor Pedro I's parents). The sphere replaced the imperial arms after the Republic was proclaimed on 15 November 1889.

Stars have been added over time as Brazil's states were created or reorganised; the current 27-star arrangement was set in 1992. Each star corresponds to a Brazilian state or the Federal District.
